Work Function

Work Function — the NEET Physics formula with its derivation, variables, validity constraints and worked solver.

Work Function Applicable to the emission of electrons from a metal surface when light of sufficient frequency is incident upon it. Definition of work function as the minimum energy needed to remove an electron from the metal surface. Relating energy to frequency using the Planck-Einstein relation E = hv. Substituting frequency with speed/wavelength (v = c/lambda). Surface must be clean for accurate measurement. Assumes single-photon to single-electron interaction. Valid for metals and some semiconductors. Thinking work function depends on the intensity of incident light. Confusing threshold wavelength (maximum) with threshold frequency (minimum). Assuming work function is the same for all materials.
