Impulse

Impulse — the NEET Physics formula with its derivation, variables, validity constraints and worked solver.

Impulse Strictly valid for constant forces. For variable forces, F represents the average force over the time interval. Defines the area under a Force-Time graph. Start with Newton's Second Law: F = dp/dt Rearrange to separate variables: F dt = dp Integrate both sides over the time interval: Integral(F dt) = Integral(dp) Define Impulse J as Integral(F dt) and Delta p as change in momentum For constant or average force, the integral simplifies to J = F Delta t Time interval must be non-negative Force assumes a vector direction constant relative to the calculation or averaged Impulse is often confused with Force itself (N vs N·s) Belief that a large force always implies a large impulse (ignores duration) Confusing Impulse with Power or Energy
