Electric Dipole Moment — the NEET Physics formula with its derivation, variables, validity constraints and worked solver.
Electric Dipole Moment Applies to a system comprising two point charges of equal magnitude but opposite sign separated by a distance. Define a system with charge +q and -q. Identify the position vector of +q relative to -q as d. Define dipole moment p as the product of magnitude q and vector d. Charges must be of equal magnitude. Charges must be of opposite sign. Distance d is the straight-line displacement between charges. Direction is from positive to negative (Physics convention is negative to positive). Dipole moment is a scalar (It is a vector quantity). Net charge of a dipole is non-zero (Net charge is always zero).
